Oliver Shokouh, Founder & Chairman

Glendale, Ca — The Love Ride, canceled last year because of a challenging economy, is planning to start again in fall 2011. The announcement was made by Oliver Shokouh, Love Ride founder and owner of Harley-Davidson/Buell of Glendale. As part of the announcement, Shokouh confirmed that there would be no “Ride” this year (in 2010). In its place, there will be a Love Ride 261/2 Biker’s Carnival held at Glendale Harley-Davidson on Sunday, October 24, 2010.

“The economy remains in flux, and although there are some positive signs, we want to make sure both the Love Ride and the Love Ride Foundation are on solid ground before we continue our mission,

Peter Fonda, Honorary Grand Marshall

which is to raise money for children’s charities and those less fortunate in our community,” says Shokouh, “We’re excited, and at the same time, humbled by the response from the community at large to bring the Love Ride back as soon as possible. Meetings have been slated for the Love Ride Board of Directors and other community leaders. We are meeting to outline a new game plan for the ride. As a stopgap this year, our Love Ride 261/2 Bikers Carnival will be held at Glendale Harley on the day usually reserved for the Love Ride. With this biker’s carnival, we’re going retro.”

Shokouh’s “retro” reference refers to how the Love Ride started in 1981 and 1982 as a biker’s carnival, then skipped a year before coming back as the Love Ride. “Our beneficiaries still need our help and support,” adds Shokouh.

Citing slow ticket sales, vendor bookings and sponsorship, Shokouh pulled the plug on Love Ride 26 last October after a quarter century of consistent growth. In its twenty-five years, the Love Ride has raised $22 million for various charities, in the process becoming known as the “Granddaddy” of motorcycle charity rides. Each year, riders come from around the world to experience the feeling of riding with 20,000 bikers from Glendale Harley to a predetermined venue for an afternoon filled with great food and music.

Willie G. Davidson, Honorary Chairman

The ride has attracted hundreds of thousands of bikers, from regular guys to A-list celebrities such as comedian/TV host Jay Leno, who served as the ride’s official Grand Marshal for twenty-four straight years. The Love Ride has featured performances from some of the biggest names in music, most recently the Foo Fighters, who headlined the event’s Silver Anniversary in 2008. Other talent gracing the Love Ride stage has included Robbie Krieger (from the Doors), Crosby, Stills & Nash, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Idol, Mick Fleetwood, Jackson Browne, ZZ Top, Steve Miller, George Thorogood, BB King, Sheryl Crow and Gregg Allman.

Although the Love Ride “event” is on hiatus, the Love Ride Foundation continues to accept donations throughout the year through the sale of Love Ride merchandise and the aforementioned Love Ride Biker’s Carnival to be held this October.

For more information and updates on the Love Ride and Love Ride Foundation, go to www.loveride.org or contact the Love Ride Chairperson, Oliver Shokouh, at oliver@loveride.org.

American Motorcycle Specialties, USA (www.amspecialtiesusa.com) announces a new addition its innovative line of Comfort Max ™ Gel Pads. The new Ortho-Deluxe gel pad is designed to offer today’s riders unparalleled comfort on any bike, or any style of riding. Joe McNeil, President of American Motorcycle Specialties stated, “We narrowed the pad in front so that it won’t cause riders to spread or raise their legs while delivering uncompromised riding comfort on big bikes. As with our old design, an orthopedic notch in the cushion relieves pressure on the tail bone. The gel pad’s unique cut-out section eliminates painful pressure on the tailbone and helps your spine relax.” Designed for large cruiser and touring riders, the Ortho-Deluxe gel pad measures 18” x 17” long.

At the core of the Comfort Max(tm) Ortho-Deluxe Gel Pad is an advanced Viscoelastic molded gel used in medical and sports applications. Its unique properties include the elimination of pressure points or “Hot Spots” which can cause rider discomfort. In addition to absorbing vibration, small bumps and road irregularities, it helps relieve back ache, fatigue, discomfort, soreness and numbness.

Comfort Max(tm) Gel Pads feature a unique, maximum grip bottom. This rubberized surface prevents the pad from sliding off the seat and does not require the use of permanent straps. You just put the pad on the seat and ride away. When you make a stop, just take the pad with you or toss it in your saddlebag.

The new Ortho-Deluxe gel pad comes in a stretch vinyl or genuine sheepskin cover. The sheepskin cover provides increased comfort and allows air to circulate, virtually eliminating perspiration. Four other sizes are also offered: Buddy Pad 11” x 7” wide, Medium Pad 12” x 12” x 5”, Large Pad 14” x 11” x 8” wide front and the Jumbo 16.5” x 12” x 9” wide front. MSRP $69.95-$124.95

For complete details and all available options call (800) 710-7237, go to the online secure shopping site… American Motorcycle Specialties, 2944 Salmon River Circle, Westlake Village, CA 91362 www.amspecialtiesusa.com

Angeles Crest Highway (State Highway 2), which has been closed between La Cañada Flintridge and Wrightwood since late August due to damage sustained during the Station fire, reopened to traffic on Monday morning.

The fire, which burned more than 160,000 acres in the Angeles National Forest, damaged thousands of feet of guard rail and pavement, rendering the highway impassable. Dan Freeman, director of maintenance for Caltrans District 7, said Caltrans and Los Angeles County Public Works crews labored for two months to clear debris basins and storm drains, re-strip roads and replaced guardrails, road signs and road markers The crews also implemented some mitigating measure to try and protect Angeles Crest Highway from landslides, he added.

“Caltrans has been working in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, U.S. Forest Service, California High Patrol and several other entities to ensure that the repairs to the Angeles Crest Highway are safe and seamless,” Freeman said.

The reopening of the highway, however, is tentative at best. Geological experts at the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Geological Survey have warned repeatedly that the conditions in the Angeles National Forest — namely charred soil and steep slopes — are ripe for massive and dangerous mudslides.

A brief but intense rainstorm on Nov. 12 sent mud and water pouring down into the Paradise Valley neighborhood of La Cañada Flintridge, seriously damaging six homes.

On Monday, the reopening of Angeles Crest was delayed slightly while crews cleared debris from the roadway, the result of a small rock slide. Motorcyclists, eager to visit a favorite local route, described having to slowly weave their way through debris.

Tony Nieves, who took the day off from work to ride his motorcycle up to Wrightwood, said he had to stop at several spots where road crews continued to work to clear the highway and install guard rails.

“They’re still stopping traffic.” Nieves said. “There is still gravel, it could be dangerous.”

Patrick Chandler, spokesperson for Caltrans, said that the various agencies will continually monitor safety conditions in the Angeles National Forest and on Angeles Crest Highway.

“It is very steep up there and there is no vegetation due to the Station fire,” Chandler said. “If there is mud on the road, no one will be able to get up there. If the road is not safe, it will be closed.”

Traditionally, the highway is trafficked by motorcyclists, hikers, campers and other day trippers. It is also a commuter route for motorists traveling from Palmdale to Los Angeles.

According to a 2008 traffic count conducted by the California Department of Transportation, Angeles Crest Highway typically carried 4,500 vehicles per day north of the city. Within La Cañada, Angeles Crest Highway carried 10,000 to 12,000 vehicles per day. City traffic engineer Erik Zandvliet said the road closure has resulted in a 55% reduction in traffic.

Mark Kim, co-owner of the Hill Street Cafe, which is located at the south terminus of Angeles Crest Highway in La Cañada, estimated that his business dropped 15% during the three months of closure.

“You can’t imagine how many motorcycles come here, and how many cars come to go up Angeles Crest and then come here to eat,” Kim said.

Sabir Enabi, manager of a Shell gas station located on Angeles Crest Highway just north of Foothill Boulevard, said that before the Station fire, hundreds of motorcyclists would stop by each weekend to fill their tanks, buy snacks and hang out. In the wake of the fire, he said, he has lost about 40% of his business.

“We struggled mostly on the weekends because of the motorcyclists,” Enabi said.

Newcomb’s Ranch, a popular dining spot located 27 miles up Angeles Crest Highway from La Cañada, had a steady stream of customers on Monday. The restaurant, like Mt. Waterman Ski Resort, was protected by dozens of firefighters during the Station fire and survived untouched.

Rick and Brien Metcalf, brothers who grew up in La Cañada and purchased Mt. Waterman in 2006, said the highway reopened just in time for their employee orientation on Sunday. The resort will open for business as soon as a weather conditions create a solid snow base for skiing, they said.

“We are all ready to go,” Rick Metcalf said. “We are just waiting for some of that first snow to come down and we will be ready to open.”
