The Senate Committee on Health and Welfare today refused to vote on a bill that would repeal the state’s mandatory motorcycle helmet law, probably killing the measure for the session.
Despite support from Gov. Bobby Jindal’s office, the committee refused to vote for or against the measure, a move that bottles the bill up in committee.
Jindal’s Executive Counsel Jimmy Faircloth urged the committee to pass the bill, calling it a matter of “freedom of choice.” However, several emergency room physicians testified that helmets save lives and minimize the injury.
